TREATMENTS OF HINKLEY SWIM POND
The swim pond receives chemical treatments, administered by Solitude Lake Management, roughly every 2-3 weeks. Over the last several years this has been a spray, either from a boat or backpack.

The two chemicals used were Captain (active ingredient is Copper and there are no water restrictions with this treatment) and SeClear (active ingredient is Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate1, also used with no water restrictions). What is meant by “no water restrictions” is that it is safe to swim after the treatment has been applied (these are the same treatments the company uses for drinking water reservoirs) which is why the person performing the treatment did not tell people to stop swimming. What we prefer is when a treatment is performed to wait up to 12 hours before using the pond to allow the chemicals to do their work without disruption (these treatments are quite expensive). It is typical that a lake or pond would close when the treatments are done (hence why we have them performed after 6pm when we close for the day) but it is not a requirement.

Also these treatments are done after extensive work in the preseason. The company Medfield Parks & Recreation contract with, Solitude Lake Management, must get an Order of Conditions (OOC) approved through the Conservation Commission detailing what and how the treatments will be done. Then they take that OOC to apply for a permit with the state Department of Public Health . Once that is finalized, we then determine a schedule for when treatments would be done at Hinkley Pond. There isn’t a set schedule -- typically every 2-3 weeks -- but a lot is dependent on the weather and usage at the pond.

When a treatment has been done, there have been orange notices posted at the entrance of the pond.
